The Taupo Volcanic Zone stretches from Mt Ruapehu in the Central Plateau to White Island, in the Bay of Plenty which we know as New Zealand’s most active volcano. It is known as one of the world’s largest and most active geothermal and volcanic areas to date and has been active for about 1.8million years. Just two kilometres north of the Huka Falls is situated the Volcanic Activity Centre.
Discover the fascinating volcanic and geothermal secrets of the Taupo Volcanic Zone through hands on interactive displays that make learning both easy and fun for all ages. A true Volcanic Activity Centre favourite is the Earthquake Simulator; experience the devastating 6.3 Christchurch earthquake of 2011 in the Earthquake Simulator. See how a live geyser works above and below the ground, wait for the build up of pressure and watch it spurt every few minutes. Check the live seismograph activity which will show you current, of the minute earth tremors throughout New Zealand at that moment in time. Control the tornado machine to create a twister of your very own design.
Interactive computers will show you how the tectonic plates are changing in the Central Plateau. View our live GeoNet connection and check out volcano cams from the Taupo Volcanic Zone which include a link to the most recent earthquakes throughout New Zealand. Continuous films will screen daily allowing you to look back in time and witness spectacular film footage of the 1995 Mt Ruapehu eruption in all its glory also including exclusive footage of the Mt Ruapehu Lahar of 2007. Don’t forget to visit our volcanic shop which stocks specialised books, posters, gems, videos and volcanic rocks.
